Speakeasies were places that illegally sold alcoholic beverages. These places started to pop up
when the United States entered the Prohibition era. Speakeasies were very much like today’s clubs. To
enter one, people would have to say a password to the doorperson in order to keep secret agents out.
People say that for every legal saloon before the Prohibition, at least half were put up after the
prohibition. The term “speakeasy” comes from a bartender’s term people said at the bar. It means not
to draw any attention towards alcoholic beverages. Most speakeasies involved gangs that supplied the
beverages. One of the most well known gang member was Al Capone. Speakeasies often played jazz
music and flappers would come and dance. Speakeasies were found all around America and Canada.
Speakeasies slowly went away after the 1930s.
